AVID (Achievement via Individual Determination)
The AVID program comprises a series of elective courses for students who are college bound. While concurrently enrolled in a college preparatory program of course work, students work individually, as well as in tutor-led collaborative groups. Note taking, outlining, writing, speaking, reading, test taking strategies, and self-awareness are stressed. In addition, the course includes college motivational activities. The AVID curriculum focuses on writing, inquiry, and collaboration (WIC) through the AVID High School Libraries in both teacher and tutor led activities.The prerequisites for admission into any AVID class are: GPA between 2.0 and 3.0; average or above standardized test scores; enrollment in Algebra 1A or higher; a successful student interview; demonstrated motivation, positive attitude; a completed parent contract and be the first in the family to attend college.
AVID 9-10A 10 unit elective course for students who are college bound. While concurrently enrolled in a college preparatory program of course work, students work individually, as well as in tutor-led collaborative groups. The AVID curriculum focuses on writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading (WICR) through the AVID High School Libraries curriculum. Course curriculum and activities emphasize organization skills, note taking, outlining, writing, speaking, reading, test taking strategies, time and study management, self-awareness, and goal setting. In addition, the course includes college motivational activities. Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives.AVID 11A 10 unit elective course for students who are college bound. While concurrently enrolled in a college preparatory program of coursework, junior students strengthen writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading skills using WICR strategies. Course curriculum and activities stress self-awareness and personal development, planning for college admission/entrance exams, choosing a college, and the college application process. Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives.* Pre-requisites: All pre-requisites listed in the AVID description above must be fulfilled. Additionally, student must have completed at least one semester of AVID 9/10; minimum GPA of 2.5 and maintained all grades at a C or better, parent contract on file, average or above standardized test scores, enrollment in at least one Advanced Placement course and Honors English, must be “on track” in meeting university admission requirements.
AVID Senior SeminarA 10 unit elective course for students who are college bound. While concurrently enrolled in a college preparatory program of coursework, senior students strengthen writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading skills using WICR strategies. Course curriculum and activities emphasize college admission essays, college placement exams, financial aid/scholarships, the “school to professional” plan, and preparing for college life. Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives. The AVID Senior Seminar may be used to meet one year of the electives requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements) only if both AVID 11 and the AVID Senior Seminar are successfully completed.Pre-requisites: All pre-requisites listed in the AVID description above must be fulfilled. Additionally, student must have completed AVID 11; minimum GPA of 2.5 and maintained all grades at a C or better, parent contract on file, average or above standardized test scores, enrollment in at least one Advanced Placement course, must be “on track” in meeting university admission requirements.
AVID TutorA 10 unit class for students serving as AVID Tutors. AVID Tutors will provide support in the AVID classroom by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups, participating in evaluating and scoring student work/binders, assisting students in any phase of the writing process, and assisting in preparing resource materials. Fulfills 10 credits of the high graduation requirement in electives.Pre-requisites: Approval of AVID Coordinator, minimum GPA of 3.0, average or above standardized test scores, enrollment in at least one Advanced Placement course, must be “on track” in meeting university admission requirements.
