A 10 unit introductory course in horticulture and related practices. The course focuses on the production and management of plants for food and landscape purposes. It covers nursery management, and basic landscape maintenance. The goals of the course are to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for an entry-level position in the horticulture industry, and to provide the students with the background knowledge and practice necessary for the Landscape Maintenance and Design class. FFA instruction and participation, and student projects (Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs) are required components of the class. This class is articulated with the Agriculture program at the College of the Sequoias. Students who satisfactorily complete the class earn three COS units towards a certificate of completion in Horticulture. Fulfills a 10 credit high school graduation requirement as an elective and the one year of the advanced elective requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Landscape Maintenance & Design
A 10 unit class that focuses on the practices and techniques of fertilizing, pinching, irrigating, weeding, pruning, training and transplanting used to maintain existing landscapes. It also covers basic landscape design, and basic plant anatomy and physiology as they relate to plants used in the landscape. The goals of the course are to provide the students with the basic knowledge and skills required for an entry-level position in Landscape Maintenance and the background knowledge and skills needed for an entry-level college course in Landscape or Horticulture. FFA Participation and student projects (Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs) are requirements of the class. Fulfills a 10 credit high school graduation requirement as an elective and the one year of the advanced elective requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Leadership in Agri-Science
A 10 unit course that focuses on leadership categories and styles, including employment skills. It covers the fundamentals of communication, public speaking, working in groups, parliamentary procedure, group dynamics and team building, goal setting, problem solving and decision making, personal development and the transition to work skills. FFA instruction and participation, and student projects (Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs) are requirements of the class. The goals of the course are to provide the students with basic leadership and personal development skills that will transfer as the students continue with their education, community involvement and employment. Fulfills a 10 credit high school graduation requirement as an elective. Pre-requisite: Introduction to AgriScience and the Ag Biology
Animal Science
A 10 unit course designed to explore various segments of the Animal Science and Livestock Industry. Students will learn basic managerial skills involved in the raising of those breeds of sheep, swine, beef, and dairy that are important to the industry. Feeding practices, basic veterinarian skills, systems of breeding and a study of the various systems are among the more significant areas studied. FFA instruction and participation and student projects (Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs) are requirements of the class. The goals of the course are to provide the students with basic knowledge and skills necessary for an entry level position in the Agricultural Industry, and to provide the students with the basic background knowledge necessary for an entry level college course in animal science. Fulfills a 10 credit high school graduation requirement as an elective and the one year of the advanced elective requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements)
