A 10 unit college preparatory study of the basic aspects of the Spanish language. The class is conducted in Spanish and covers vocabulary, alphabet,numbers, greetings and farewells, questions, words, and the fundamental aspects of grammar. The course also includes astudy of Spanish speaking cultures, behavior, beliefs, and values of the peoplein Spanish speaking countries. Fulfills the10 credit high school graduation requirement in foreign language and one year of the two year foreign language requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements).
Spanish 2
A 10 unit college preparatory course that is a continuation of Spanish 1. Vocabulary acquisition is increased. New phraseology is introduced, along with advanced verb tenses.The class emphasis is a cultural approach to the study of Spanish. Fulfills the 10 credit high school graduation requirement in foreign language and one year of the two year foreign language requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Spanish 3
A 10 unit college preparatory coursethat continues to develop the speaking and listening skills of the student while introducing the history of Latin American countries, with an emphasis on Central and South American nations. The course is conducted in Spanish and includes an emphasis on Spanish history,art, music, and cuisine, as well as an increased emphasis on reading andwriting skills and the study of formal grammar. Fulfills the 10 credit highschool graduation requirement in foreign language and one year of the two year foreignlanguage requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Spanish 4
A 10 unit college preparatory coursethat continues the development of all language skills through the use of Hispanic history and cultural studies, with particular emphasis on thecountries of Mexico and Spain. Focus is placed on writing style and will include student projects in tutoring others. Fulfills the10 credit high school graduation requirement in foreign language and one yearof the two year foreign language requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system(A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Spanish 3 with a grade of C or better.
Spanish for Spanish Speakers
A 10 unit college preparatory course designed as a replacement for Spanish 1 and 2 for those students who areorally fluent in the Spanish language. Study is particularly given to reading, writing, and translating skills,while perfecting standard Spanish grammar. Spanish history and culture will be emphasized. Upon completion of this class, the student should enter Spanish 3 or 4. Fulfills the 10 credit high school graduation requirement in foreign language and one year of the two year foreign language requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Oral fluency in Spanish determined by testing or permission of instructor.
Advanced Placement Spanish
A 10 unit college level course designed to prepare students to pass the AP Spanish Exam for which they may earn college credit. The course continues the development of oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and composition for active communication. The class is conducted in Spanish and includes an emphasis on the arts, history, current events, literature, and culture of the Hispanic countries. Fulfills the 10 credit high school graduation requirement in foreign language and one year of the two year foreign language requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements).
Advanced Placement Spanish Literature
A 10 unit college level course intended to be the equivalent of a third-year college Hispanic Literature Course.The students are required to read, analyze, discuss orally and in writing a wide variety of representative works from three major genres: prose, poetry and drama; from the Middle Age to the Golden Age and nineteenth century to more contemporary writers. The students will learn literary terminology and vocabulary in order to analyze critically and analytically the form and content of literary texts In this context, students will do close reading of all the required readings from the AP Spanish Literature Exam issued by the College Board. Upon conclusion of the course, the students should be prepared for the AP SpanishLiterature examination held in May. The class is conducted completely in Spanish.
