Building Trades
A 20 unit course that prepares the student with occupational skills in the areas of carpentry, plumbing and electrical. The students will receive instruction from a licensed vocational instructor. Students will learn skill building; reading plans, measuring, cutting, installing etc., they will learn the safe use of hand tools and power tools and cutting edge construction techniques. Students who successfully complete the year-long course may have the opportunity to enter in to the Pre-Apprentice Training Program which is sponsored by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Fulfills 20 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives.
Student Assistant
A 10 unit class for students acting as an assistant to one of the high school instructors. Students may assist other students, prepare materials, run copies, or complete other work at the direction of the instructor. The course requires prior approval of the instructor, and requires students to sign a confidentiality contract. Students must have attained at least 10th grade status and must maintain a 2.0 GPA. The course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis and does not count towards a student's Grade Point Average (GPA). Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives.
Office Assistant
A 10 unit class for students acting as an office assistant. Students will perform receptionist duties, learn to file, collect attendance sheets, deliver messages, and perform other general office duties. The course requires prior approval of one of the office secretaries or counselors, and requires students to sign a confidentiality contract. Students must have attained at least 10th grade status and must maintain a 2.0 GPA. The course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis and does not count towards a studen's Grade Point Average (GPA). Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives.
Library Assistant
A 10 unit class for students acting as a library assistant. Student librarians learn how to use electronic, as well as conventional resources to locate books, magazines, or other materials, so they may assist other students using the library and media/computer lab. Student librarians must be willing to become proficient in all software used in the library and media/computer lab. The course requires prior approval of the library technician, and requires students to sign a confidentiality contract. The course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis and does not count towards a student's Grade Point Average (GPA). Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives.
Student Tutor
A 10 unit class for 10th through 12th grade students who are interested in working with other students on an instructional basis. Students may perform some duties similar to those of a Student Assistant, but will also assist others who are working in small groups or individually on assignments and projects. The course requires prior approval of one of the counselors, and requires students to sign a confidentiality contract. Other duties might include: assisting in translating instructions and/or content, where appropriate, for students with limited English abilities, and giving extended explanations and assistance for disabled students. The course is graded and does count towards a student's Grade Point Average (GPA). Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives. Students who enroll in this class must have an excellent attendance record and demonstrate strong leadership skills.
Independent Projects
A 10 unit class for those students in grades 9 -12 with sufficient competency, maturity, and responsibility to pursue largely self-guided instruction. The course allows students to complete complex projects using skills gained in the subject area. Projects in the class may require research, independent investigation, and mastery of a process, limited supervision of other students or the completion of major tasks. Work completed in the course should be considered the basis for employment recommendations. The student will be expected to work independently with guidance from the instructor and to report regularly to the instructor on the progress made toward completion of the project. The nature of the project and methods of assessing the student's performance in the course will be discussed and agreed upon by the instructor and students, and approved by the Principal prior to the student enrolling in the course. The course may be repeated. The course is graded and does count towards a student' Grade Point Average (GPA). Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives.
Leadership
A 10 unit class designed for students interested in furthering their skills in student government and activity planning.Students develop expertise in speaking and writing, budgeting, working with diverse groups, planning and organizing, communicating, problem solving, decision-making and team building. The course is graded and does count towards a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA). Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in electives. Pre-requisite: Must hold an elected or appointed position or be in a co-curricular leadership position, or be interested in learning leadership skills for use in high school and beyond.
