Material from a variety of historical periods is interwoven with those eras’ social history so that students gain a contextual sense of the literature. Included in the course is the study of literary terms, vocabulary, the process of research, and the writing of thesis papers based upon the literature. Critical analysis and thinking skills are heavily emphasized. Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition: The AP English course in Literature and Composition will engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. In this college level course, students will read works from several genres and periods from the 16th centuries. Writing will be an integral part of this course since the AP examination is weighted toward student writing about literature. Writing assignments will focus on the critical analysis of literature, and will include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays. This class may include summer reading assignments, and zero periods/or Saturday classes in the opposite term from which the class is scheduled. Students receive an extra grade point for grades of C or better, and can obtain college credit by receiving an evaluation of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam given in the spring. Fulfills 10 credits of the high school graduation requirement in English and one year of the four year Language Arts requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements)
