A college preparatory course in which students study turning points that shaped the modern world from the late eighteenth century through the present. Content includes the study of the influence of Greek and Roman societies on Western political thought, comparison of enlightenment philosophers and revolutions that raise political expectations for self-government, the industrial revolution, the age of new imperialism, cause and effect of World War I and World War II, and post World War II global issues. A college level course designed to develop greater understanding of the evolution of global processes and contacts, in interaction with different types of human societies. The course highlights the nature of changes in international frameworks and their causes and consequences, as well as comparisons among major societies. Focused primarily on the past thousand years, the course builds on an understanding of cultural, institutional, and technological precedents that, along with geography, set the human stage prior to 1000 C.E. Periodization forms the organizing principle for dealing with change and continuity from that point to the present. The course is designed to prepare students for success on the AP World History exam, and would be particularly effective taken in combination with the AP Art History course. Fulfills the 10 credit World History high school graduation requirement and one year of the two year History/Social Science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). The role of religion in the founding of America, cause and effect of the Civil War, Industrialization, the U.S. rise to world power including WW I, developments of the 1920s, Great Depression and New Deal, World War II, Post War U.S. economic growth, foreign policy since World War II, Civil Rights, Social and domestic issues of contemporary American society. 10 UnitsA college level course that provides an advanced level of study for the highly motivated college-bound student, covering the traditional overview of American History from the colonial period to modern times. The emphasis is on critical writing, analysis, discussion, and interpretation of historical events as covered in both textbook materials and primary source documents. The course is designed to prepare students for success on the AP US History exam.
