Biology P
10 Units
A college preparatory lab science course in the basic life sciences. The course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of and appreciation for the complexity and diversity of organisms on earth, past and present. A solid foundation of organism structure and function and interactions between biotic and biotic factors will be gained in this course. Students will also be exposed to careers available in life science related fields, as well as current technological practices. Students gain experience and proficiency in the process of scientific inquiry and the communication of results and analysis. Fulfills the 10-credit life science requirement for high school graduation and one year of the two year laboratory science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1 with a grade of C or better (may be taken concurrently) or permission of instructor.Advanced Biology
10 Units
A college preparatory laboratory science course for students in grades 11 or 12 that focusing on expanding students’ knowledge of biological principles. Students will engage in complex laboratory investigations, independent research activities and group discussions. Students enrolled in this course should consider enrolling in AP Biology for which they may earn college credit. Fulfills the 10-credit life science requirement for high school graduation and one year of the two year laboratory science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Completion of Chemistry with a grade of C or better (may be taken concurrently) or permission of instructor.Advanced Placement (AP) Biology
10 Units
A college level laboratory science course, utilizing current technology to explore the fundamental concepts of biochemistry. The course is heavily lab based and is designed to prepare students to be successful on the AP exam for which they may earn college credit. Students enrolled in this course must also be enrolled in or have already completed Advanced Biology. Fulfills the 10-credit life science requirement for high school graduation and one year of the two year laboratory science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Advanced Biology and Chemistry with a grade of C or better.Earth Science
10 Units
A college preparatory lab science course in the basic Earth sciences. The course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of and appreciation for the complexity of climate and weather, plate tectonics, astronomy, rocks and minerals, weathering and erosion, earth’s history and California geology. Fulfills the 10-credit physical science requirement for high school graduation. Does not meet a science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment of Algebra 1 or permission of instructor.Life Science
10 Units
An introductory science course designed for a student’s first course in the life sciences. This course gives the student a basic introduction to the principles of biology, the metric system, and graphing skills. Topics include cell structure, transformation, and genetics, as well as other concepts in the life sciences. Fulfills the 10-credit life science requirement for high school graduation. Does not meet a science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements).Chemistry
10 Units
A college preparatory course that usually follows Biology in the high school curriculum. The student will learn about the atomic world and the chemical nature of elements and how they relate to the world in which we live. They will develop college oriented study skills and become competent in Algebra while completing the goals and objectives of this course. Fulfills the 10-credit physical science requirement for high school graduation and one year of the two year laboratory science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment with Algebra 2 and a grade of C or better in previous science course or permission of instructor.
AP Chemistry
10 Units
An advanced placement laboratory science course designed to prepare the student for the AP Chemistry exam. The course covers the equivalent of a standard college level course at a college or university. The course is a rigorous math-based course, with a strong laboratory component. It is intended for students who have demonstrated a willingness to commit considerable time to studying and completing assignments outside of class, and is designed to prepare students to be successful on the AP exam. Students receive an extra grade point for grades of C or better, and can obtain college credit by receiving a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam given in the spring. Fulfills the 10-credit physical science requirement for high school graduation and one year of the two year laboratory science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Completion of Chemistry with a grade of B or better.Physics
10 Units
A college preparatory laboratory science course designed to give students a background in the fundamental principles of physics and critical thinking skills used in solving problems in physics. The major topic areas include the general nature of physics, units of measurement and uncertainty, mechanics, work and energy, properties of matter; wave properties/sound and light, electricity, magnetism, nuclear physics and astronomy. Laboratory work and homework are required parts of the curriculum. Projects may be required. Fulfills the 10-credit physical science requirement for high school graduation and one year of the two year laboratory science requirement for admission to the UC/CSU system (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment with Algebra 2 and a grade of "C" or better in previous science course or permission of instructor.
