Spanish 1
Spanish 1 is an entry-level course for students who are non-native speakers of Spanish. Students will develop their four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A range of grammatical structures will be integrated with studying themes and texts. The course emphasizes the study of various topics, including greetings, farewells, likes, dislikes, colors, shapes, dates, numbers, descriptions, autobiographical information, weather, and sports. Students acquire insight into the nature of language and culture.
Upon completion of this class, the student should enter Spanish 2. Fulfills 10-credits of the foreign language requirements for high school graduation and partially meets the foreign language requirement for the admission to the UC/CSU systems (A – G Requirements).
Spanish 2
This course is a continuation of Spanish 1 for students who are non-native speakers of Spanish. Students will continue to develop their four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A range of grammatical structures will be integrated with studying themes and texts. The course emphasizes the study of various topics, including likes, dislikes, places, directions, numbers, time, dates, questions, answers, affirmative, negative expressions, foods, meals, commands, and celebrations. Students will become more aware and gain knowledge of the culturally diverse Spanish-speaking world to acquire insight into the nature of language and culture.
Upon completing this class, the student should enter Spanish 3. Fulfills 10-credits of the foreign language requirements for high school graduation and partially meets the foreign language requirement for the admission to the UC/CSU systems (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Spanish 1 with a grade of C or better.
Spanish 3
This course focuses on the continued development of speaking and listening skills, followed by skill development in reading and writing. Spanish 3 is primarily conducted in Spanish and includes an emphasis on the history, art, music, and cuisine of Spanish- speaking countries, along with new aspects of Spanish grammar, to attain proficiency in Spanish. In addition, the students will become more aware and gain knowledge of the culturally diverse Spanish-speaking world to develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
The student should enter AP Spanish Language and Culture after completing this class. Fulfills 10-credits of the foreign language requirements for high school graduation and partially meets the foreign language requirement for the admission to the UC/CSU systems (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Spanish 2 with a grade of C or better.
Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1-2
This course is an introductory course for students who are native and heritage speakers of Spanish. The students will gain rich language experience, vocabulary enrichment, writing skills, spelling, development of formal writing styles, and reading, focusing on the following four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, the students will explore the Spanish-speaking world's products, practices, and perspectives to gain knowledge of the target language and cultures. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish to facilitate the study of language and culture.
Upon completing this class, the student should enter Spanish for Spanish Speakers 3-4. Fulfills 10-credits of the foreign language requirements for high school graduation and meets 2 years of the foreign language requirement for the admission to the UC/CSU systems (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Oral fluency in Spanish determined by testing or permission of instructor.
Spanish for Spanish Speakers 3-4
Spanish for Spanish Speakers 3-4 is the second part of a four-year program designed for students who are native and heritage speakers of Spanish. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish to facilitate the study of language and culture. The emphasis of the class is on mastering the intermediate and advanced grammatical structure and spelling through writing, speaking, reading, listening, and viewing in preparation for AP Spanish Language and college. In addition to improving their linguistic abilities, the students will develop their interpretive and presentational skills by being exposed to field trips, informational texts, films, music, and literary works by renowned Spanish and Latin American authors.
The student should enter AP Spanish Language and Culture after completing this class. Fulfills 10-credits of the foreign language requirements for high school graduation and partially meets the foreign language requirement for the admission to the UC/CSU systems (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1-2 with a grade of C or better.
AP Spanish Language and Culture
Ap Spanish Language and Culture is a college-level course designed to prepare students to pass the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam. The class is conducted entirely in Spanish. Students develop a strong command of the Spanish language by integrating the three modes of communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and presentational), as defined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. In addition, students broaden their knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world's various cultures through the thematic approach of the AP Spanish Language and Culture course. Students can obtain college credit by receiving an evaluation of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam given in May.
The student should enter AP Spanish Literature and Culture after completing this class. Fulfills 10-credits of the foreign language requirements for high school graduation and meets the foreign language requirement for the admission to the UC/CSU systems (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Completing Spanish for Native Speakers 3-4 with a grade of C or better.
AP Spanish Literature and Culture
AP Spanish Literature and Culture is a college-level course designed to introduce students to the formal study of Peninsular Spanish, Latin American, and U.S. Hispanic literature. The course aims to develop students’ critical reading and analytical writing skills in Spanish and their ability to make interdisciplinary connections and explore linguistic and cultural comparisons. The class will be conducted entirely in Spanish appropriate to this level and covers the official AP Spanish Literature and Culture reading list. Literary texts are grouped by themes and presented chronologically within each theme. Students are expected to discuss literary texts and their different historical, socio-cultural, and geopolitical contexts in various interactive oral and written formats in Spanish. Additionally, students will analyze themes and features of artistic representations, audiovisual materials, and audio sources in Spanish related to course content. Students can obtain college credit by receiving an evaluation of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam given in May. Fulfills 10-credits of the foreign language requirements for high school graduation and meets the foreign language requirement for the admission to the UC/CSU systems (A – G Requirements). Prerequisite: Completion AP Spanish Language and Culture with a grade of C or better.
