Special Education

The Special Education Department of Farmersville Unified School District (FUSD) serves the needs of students with disabilities who qualify for special education. By collaborating with general education teachers, the department provides support for students both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring they meet established guidelines. The primary goal of special education is to help students acquire the skills needed to participate in and progress within the general curriculum and school environment.
Services and supports are provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law that forms the foundation for special education nationwide. IDEA ensures that students with disabilities from birth through age 21 receive a "free appropriate public education" (FAPE). This guarantee allows students to attend school daily, access educational content at the same level as their peers, and have their individual educational needs identified and met. The Special Education Department also follows up on student progress to help ensure pupils receive an education in the least restrictive environment.
IDEA guarantees four major rights:
- Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
- Fair Assessment Procedures
- Placement in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
- Parent Involvement in Educational Decisions
IDEA provides for two protections:
- Individualized Education Program (IEP)
- Due Process Procedures
The provisions of IDEA are enforced by the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. Farmersville Unified School District is committed to providing a multi-tiered system of support to ensure equal access to all students.
