Student Study Teams
Students may be referred to for support when there are concerns related to their academic progress or overall development. Families who notice concerns are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher, school counselor, social worker or school site administrator to begin a conversation. Families may also request a Student Study Team (SST) meeting, where school staff work together to better understand the students’ needs and identify appropriate support.
An SST typically includes the student’s teacher(s), a school administrator, school counselor, and the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s). During the meeting, the team collaborates to identify concerns, develop strategies and interventions, and monitor progress to support the student’s academic and social-emotional growth.
General education interventions are often implemented as part of the SST process. If additional support is needed, the team may recommend a referral for a special education assessment. Referrals may be initiated by parents/guardians, teachers, or other school staff involved in the student’s education.
